Movie Review: The Amazing Spider-Man

So I haven't done one of these in a while and since then I have seen most of the movies on my summer movie list (check out this post here). So my brother's birthday was on July 3 and its kind of a tradition I always take him out to a movie on his birthday. It helps that all of the movies we really want to see fall on his birthday.

I make it no secret that I am a huge super hero fan and Spider-Man happens to be my all time favorite, with Captain America a close second. Although he is my favorite, the last Spider-Man with Toby Maguire was for lack of a better term horrible. I mean dancing emo Spider-Man come on directors! What were you thinking?

So when a new Spider-Man movie was announced I was excited but then I saw who played Spider-Man and I was a little skeptical. Not saying that Andrew Garfield is not an exceptional actor. He did amazing in the Social Network and he was even in Doctor Who my favorite BBC show. I just didn't think he fit the geeky profile that Peter Parker requires.

Lets just say I was impressed with his performance and he had me from the first line of the movie. I don't want to give away too much about the movie (I tend to do that when really excited about a film). THIS was the best Spider-Man yet! It had action, comedy, and a love story that did not feel too cheesy or forced. And an added bonus the opening credits did not last more than a minute.

So go see The Amazing Spider-Man I think you will be blown away and the bad taste from the the third Spider-Man will be washed from your mouth.

Movies in Review: Snow White And The Huntsman

So this weekend I saw Snow White and the Huntsman one of the summer movies on my radar (you can see the post and watch the trailer here).

I loved the story line of the movie, while it followed the tale of Snow White it had some minor differences that added to the movie. For instance Snow White leads her people to try to defeat the evil queen. There are various others but I don't want to give spoilers for the movie.

The special effects and filming of this movie were breathtaking! The creatures were computer generated but it did not look like it at all to me. All of the computer generated creatures that they encounter are so creative and lifelike. I hate seeing movies with horrible CGI. If you do not know what I am talking about watch any made for SyFy movie. Then you will understand my hatred for CGI when used incorrectly.

Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth were amazing in this movie. The Evil Queen gave me chills in ever scene she was in. Her lust for power and beauty was terrifying. The Huntsman was full of guilt and loss that he was a character you pulled for from the beginning. You wanted him to win everything, even Snow White.

 Chris Hemsworth as The Huntsman

Charlize Theron as Ravenna the Evil Queen

Now to the part that I disliked about the movie: Kristen Stewart's acting. She made a great Snow White, she fit the profile for how she looks. What did not fit was her acting, it was really hard to be invested emotionally when she looked distracted and uninvolved in scenes that required sadness or pain. Even when she rallied her people I was unmotivated as an audience member.

Other than that one problem this movie is still worth seeing for everything else that I mention. I still loved this movie and would see it again.

What movies did you see this weekend?

Movies in Review: The Avengers

If you have been living under a rock for the past few weeks then you have not heard of the movie that is breaking all of the box office records and is rumored to beat out Avatar for the highest grossing movie of all time. Its called the Avengers, Marvels rag tag team of super heroes brought together by S.H.I.E.L.D to save the world from various evil doers.

I could watch this tralier all day long it give me goosbumps

This movie ranks in my top ten best films of all my life, I know IMDB call me up to start a list. This movie has it all from comedy to explosions to great filming sequences. Your probably wondering big deal another super hero movie, remember Green Lantern "yawn". But this film has what that did not a wonderful director, a fantastic cast, and Disney's money to back it up.

Check out some stills from the film

The Tesseract: look familiar?

 Loki's Arrival On Earth

Confrontation in the woods

Saving the World from ultimate destruction

I don't want to give any spoilers so I am going to keep it short and sweet. It starts with Loki his need to rule, the Avengers are asked to come together, they fight with each other, and come together in the nick of time to save the world. Its a simple formula that works for this genre of film. What makes it stand out is at various points it was funny with out feeling corny. Their ability to clue in a new fan (like Devin, he hates comic book movies but since the Avengers we have watched all the other films) and leave them with enough information so they are not clueless. In other words you do not have to be a super nerd to get it.

So all in all Avengers go see it, I think you will like it :)

I want to know what you think of the review and the movie if you have seen it or want to.
